Volleyball Australia has announced three players to attend the inaugural edition of the WPV Beach ParaVolley World Championships in China. The tournament will be held on Sunshine Beach in Chongqing, China from 30 May to 2 June.
Australia will be represented by Nick Coburn (VIC), Brad Barclay (WA) and Japhy Duldig (NSW). World ParaVolley has a development programme to stage more international tournaments which was put on hold during the COVID pandemic, with the World Championships marking a significant time for the emerging discipline of Beach ParaVolley, standing 3-on-3 competition.
“Volleyball Australia is excited to be part of the inaugural World Championships in Beach ParaVolley,” Nam Pham, Volleyball Australia Sport Delivery and Growth General Manager. “It demonstrates our commitment to nurturing this sport’s growth. We’re thrilled to see our athletes seizing this global opportunity, and we’re fully behind the future of Beach ParaVolley.”
The team’s travel cost is self-funded, with Volleyball Australia setting up a fundraising page through the Australian Sports Foundation to help them on their journey. Click here for more information and to donate.
South East Leisure have thrown their support behind the cause, with the athletes utilising the beach courts at Volleyball Victoria’s home at Dandenong Stadium in the lead up to the event. South East Leisure’s General Manager – Stadiums, Ian Jenkins said “We’re thrilled to be supporting these athletes, in particular Nick who has played at our venue for years. We wish the squad all the best and look forward to seeing them take to the sand in the green and gold”.
Victorian Nick Coburn said the squad is thrilled to be representing Australia at the World Championships. “Since the last World ParaVolley event in 2019, Volleyball Australia’s ParaVolley Program has been building steadily and it is great to be able to finally show off our development,” he said. “Our team of three has a wealth of experience with over 50 years worth of Australian ParaVolley representation. With Brad and myself having played in two previous Beach ParaVolley tournaments as well as Japhy who is coming back into the ParaVolley squad after for the first time since 2005 we’ll be hoping for a strong result.”
